That drives me nuts! Paragraph styles are another feature, and these work similarly in both programs but they are called different things. It also includes both the paragraph and character styles in one panel and gives you the option to show any overrides on the style that has been applied.
Both programs give you placeholder text. So when you adjust the size of the text frame, text is automatically removed or added depending on whether you make the frame smaller or larger. The other thing is that in Publisher, the filler text gets treated like one unit by default.
In InDesign though, you can select any part of it, remove something, break it into more paragraphs, copy it, etc. Footnotes and endnotes are another thing to consider. These can be done in InDesign with a built-in feature, but they cannot be done in Publisher in this way. If you did need them, the work-around is to add them manually. In a large document with a lot of footnotes or endnotes, especially if they need to be clickable, this could be extremely time consuming.
When it comes to creating and editing tables, Publisher makes this easy by giving you options right there on the page when you click inside a table.
It gives you an easy way to add more rows or columns. When it comes to creating a table of contents, I know how much designers avoid using an automated table of contents with their document and will do it manually. This is probably because InDesign gives you so many options, it can be overwhelming at first to create an automated table of contents.
You just place your text cursor where you want the table of contents to appear, go to the Text menu, Table of Contents and then Insert Table of Contents. Then you can select from a list which styles to include in the table of contents and which ones you want to include page numbers for. This is actually much easier than scrolling through a long list of paragraph styles in InDesign and then adding them one by one and then going to each style individually and modifying what you want to include.
When it comes to interactivity, InDesign offers more options, as you can embed multimedia files into InDesign, create hyperlinks and bookmarks, and even build forms. In Affinity Publisher, however, you are limited to hyperlinks and bookmarks. In terms of accessibility , unfortunately, this is not possible with Affinity Publisher.
So that makes it a deal breaker for any accessible document work. Adobe InDesign, on the other hand, does allow this and helps you get most of the way there with accessibility.
Publisher is great for anything, especially Hard Print Quality, Pre-Flight tests, and even online publishing. But, because they are separate products most of us will need to buy all three Photo, Publisher, and Designer. That said, it is still worth the value compared to the alternatives available.
First was the learning curve. Affinity is much easier to learn than Adobe for myself. The added bonus that it was a one time price no subscription fee month after month. I first tried the trial to find out if it was something I could learn. Then within a couple of weeks I was so pleased I cancelled Adobe and purchased all three Affinity products. This is probably the best software that I've used where it's advanced but not overly difficult.
It's difficult at first, but there really wasn't a huge learning curve for me compared to Photoshop. I like everything streamlined and right where I need it. The menus in Affinity are well organized where other programs I ask myself why they put something here or there and it doesn't make sense. I like how easy it is to select what you'd like to do with photos. With drone photography especially at night , you most likely will be taking photos with the auto exposure bracketing AEB setting which takes several photos really fast to allow the most light into the sensor to help the photos appear brighter at night.
You'd simply take all of the photos and combine them. With a drone, you have to account for any type of movement like wind and the drone itself adjusting to the gps position where you have it hovering so each photo may be slightly off.
When you combine the photos You can choose 3 settings that will show the difference in any effects used. I haven't figured this out yet, but when working with stacked photos I have a hard time seeing the difference in the before and after photo when doing side by sides. Maybe it's just me but I don't really see the difference unless I do a large effect like making the contrast really dark. It's easier to use, streamlined and has more editing options for sure.
